What an empty bin is telling you
Ice is the most sensitive thing in a freezer, and so a useful witness. Sub-Zero asks for a freezer at or below five degrees before a module will produce properly, with zero the recommended setting, so a bin that has thinned out over a fortnight is often a compartment that has climbed rather than a module that has failed. The check is free: switch the ice maker off and on, then leave it a full day before counting anything, since the maker allows twenty-four hours for production to return.
Cubes that come out hollow or undersized are a different trail altogether. That one points at the water arriving short — pressure at the valve, or a filter not seated — and it is worth separating from a warm compartment before anybody starts pricing a module.
The coil under all that hair
Every one of these cabinets rejects its heat through fins behind a grille at floor level, and it breathes whatever the room is holding. A house with animals in it holds hair, and hair mats into aluminium fins in a way plain dust never quite manages. Sub-Zero’s interval is six to twelve months and it says outright that animals make it more often; it also asks that nothing chemical be used and the soft fins not bent. A brush on a vacuum, twice a year, is the whole job.

A pantry cabinet keeps its own counsel
A freezer in the kitchen gets heard: somebody notices the note change, or sees frost where there was none. Move it into a pantry off the hall and all of that goes, leaving a number on a display — and a display reports what the unit was asked to hold, not what is on the shelf.
So the reading that settles it comes from a thermometer standing in the compartment. It is taken before any part is named, because a cabinet holding its setting has a different problem from one two degrees out, and only one of them is worth paying to fix.
