Hands lifting a bin of ice cubes out of an undercounter ice maker, with the inline water filter and supply tubing visible behind it

Worth having to hand

  • Model and serial number — inside the fresh-food door, on the upper frame
  • What the cabinet is actually holding, if you have a thermometer in there
  • What the display claims, which is often a different number
  • Any noise, and whether it changes when the door opens
  • Whether the unit is panel-ready or integrated into cabinetry

None of it is essential. It just means the first ten minutes of the visit are spent on the fault rather than on finding a serial number.

  • Our undercounter wine unit stopped cooling altogether on a warm weekend with a full rack inside. The sealed system had lost its charge slowly through a corroded joint. He repaired and recharged it, then came back to confirm it was holding.

  • Both zones had settled on one temperature whatever we set them to. A stuck damper and a dead zone sensor. He replaced both, then let it run and checked each shelf with a probe before leaving.

  • Cubes came out hollow and cloudy and collapsed in a glass of water. The harvest cycle was stalling halfway. He rebuilt the module and flushed the line. Right now, but the first visit ran late.
